This image is autobiographical and is based on a summer solstice night that friends and l spent at Wells-Next-The-Sea, Norfolk some years ago. During the course of the night, l had wandered off by myself and sat on the edge of the pine woods and the beach. After a short time, l sensed the presence of something behind me. It felt like something otherworldly, malevolent, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up on end. In that instant, l was terrified. Something within warned me that l must stay calm, so l looked out to sea and focused on the beauty before me. Eventually, l felt the presence move away. I was sure at the time, that what l had felt, was the presence of the Norfolk Black Shuck, who is said to roam the coastal areas in Norfolk. I recently bought a beautiful book on the legends and Myths of Britain. On looking up Norfolk's Black Shuck, historical records of people who claim to have felt his presence, describe exactly exactly my own experience. The text at the bottom of the image, which l have written in blue, pearlescent suspended pigment reads... 'If you should feel the presence of Black Shuck, do not be alarmed, show no fear, focus on the beauty around and of which you are a part, and no harm shall come.' Thank you for reading. <3
